Library of Monastery Irsee

The Library of the in 1802/03 dissolved benedictine Monastery Irse was integrated into the "Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg" in 1818 –1833. The fomer reading room was altered several times and is today the "Festsaal" (ballroom) of the Swabian Educational Centre. After its dissolvement, the library of monastery Irsee was out of public sight for almost 200 years. Its re-visibleness is carried out in different ways:

Two exhibitions Von Bücherschätzen und gelehrten Mönchen. Die Bibliothek Kloster Irsee in der Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg (09.11.2018 – 10.02.2019 in Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren) and Irsee: Europäische Perspektiven einer schwäbischen Klosterbibliothek (06.05. – 24.05.2019 in der Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg) present a choice of the most interesting pieces - from a manual script on parchment of 11th century to a Pope Pius VI combat organ from 1790.

According to the exhibitions, an illustrated book was published:

Abtransportiert, verschwunden und wieder sichtbar gemacht
Die Bibliothek Kloster Irsee in der Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg

In an online catalogue of the Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg one can research the preserved prints from the Irsee library as of 1501.
